Apology
The Opel Owners Club of SA and the BMW Car Club Gauteng would like to issue an apology to all the car enthusiasts who attended the Opel vs. BMW Challenge at Gerotek on 13 June 2010.

A technical fault with Gerotek’s speed reading equipment caused the following problems:-

1. The late start of the event.
2. The provision of only a time factor over the speed traps and not a speed factor.
3. After a long trial period, speeds were provided based on a time to speed calculation. Although the speeds recorded were 100% consistent across all competitors they were marginally out. The speeds recorded by the Gerotek timing equipment compared to that of GPS, clock and other in car devices were in fact slower than the anticipated true speed, a factor of approximately 5% lower than expected true speed.

Unfortunately this malady was out of our control with the Gerotek technical staff unable to rectify the issue after trying to recalibrate their equipment over a 5 hour period.

The organising committees of both hosting clubs deliberated and unanimously agreed that it was better to proceed with the event taking into account the limitations imposed and knowing that consistent timing would be recorded in order to award prizes for those participating.

It must be noted that the ultimate objective of this event is to provide the opportunity of experiencing the thrill of high speed on the Gerotek Oval. We were able to capture consistent speeds with the ability to accurately record the fastest driver and club of day.

With all aspects other than timing, the event was run professionally without a single safety incident – the day was declared a success by the majority. With this, we would like to express our gratitude to all motoring enthusiasts who came to Gerotek, waited patiently, respected the efforts and had a blast! We look forward to seeing you at Gerotek next year.
