The 23rd July saw the Gauteng BMW Car Club members descend on the premises of Savspeed Auto in Edenvale for our much awaited Dyno Day. There were a wide range of cars on the day, from a standard 320d to fire breathing, lava spitting turboed monsters. Once again Sav was a great host and gave some invaluable information to the spectators regarding power outputs and technical data. An interesting fact for those of you who are not too technically inclined is that the high altitude of JHB means that the thinner air strangles a cars output, turbo chargers and superchargers tend to minimize this problem. The reading that a manufacturer gives are usually gained under ideal conditions at sea level and read at the fly wheel. The results that you can see from the Dyno day are based on real world conditions and are read at the wheels so they take into account transmission losses among other things.

The day started off with the usual winter chill in the air, which boded well for power outputs and some very enthusiastic members were already lined up wanting to make the most of the weather. Hot chocolate and coffee kept the competitors and spectators warm as Sav ran the various machines on his Dyno, the large number of E46 M3’s meant that this year we offered a trophy for the top three cars in this category, Radesh Naidoo in his Excede chipped E46 M3 took top honours with an amazing 188kw at the wheels.  Sean Ammon in a Z4 M coupe took second spot with a result of 179kw.

The winner of the naturally aspirated class was Vassi Sanasy, his fantastic sounding M6 achieved a truly remarkable 256kw and 353nm. Mike Trafoyer came in second with his E92 M3 with 207kw at the wheels.

The really big numbers are always the preserve of the turbo charged cars, their huge turbo’s allow the engines to overcome the limitations of the thin Highveld air. Mark Jones took first place in his somewhat frightening E36 328i, it may look like a lightly modified car from the outside but give him half a chance and this particular car will show quite a few supercars the quickest way home. With final results of 288kw and 567nm, he narrowly beat Sanjay Dayah’s 282kw output. Copley Sutton took third place with a very respectable 263kw and 363nm in his E46 supercharged M3. Just as the prizes had been handed out and the bragging was beginning, Lafras Du Plooy arrived in his E30 325is Turbo, having narrowly beaten Mark at the Gerotek High Speed Oval two weeks before there was no doubt that this car was strong and the spectators gathered around the dyno for one last run. After a few attempts that saw the car hoping about on the rollers, a few of the more ‘well built’ spectators sat in the boot to stabilize the car and Sav really gave it horns. The end result was a scary 292kw, which narrowly beat Mark’s result however the torque output of 517nm was somewhat down on the 567nm’s achieved by the 328i.

That surprise result ended another great Dyno Day at Savspeed, and thanks must go to him and his team for hosting the BMW Car Club and its members. If you would like to know how much power your car is really making, whether standard or modded make sure you book early for our next Dyno day.
