Saturday morning the 11th of May 2019 saw eager trackday junkies descend upon Zwartkops for the BMW Car Club Gauteng’s second trackday of the year. Activities started early with drivers ready and waiting to be scrutineered from 7 o’ clock. With scrutineering, registration and the driver’s briefing finished, it was time for the day’s action to start.
We kicked the day off with the group 1 time trial sessions. The sessions were divided into 15 minute intervals as the Group 2 and 3 drivers also headed out on track for their first sessions of the day. Everyone settled in and started challenging their personal best lap times in the cool mid-May Highveld air.
The trackday coincided with round 4 of the Bridgestone BMW CCG Club Racing Series, so it was sure to be a fun and action filled day for competitors and spectators alike. You can read all about the day’s racing HERE.
For anyone wishing to experience the thrill and excitement of going flat out around a race track, our ever popular hot lap sessions offer you that opportunity. For only R100 per person, our track taxi Sandbag, an E46 325i Touring (that also participates in the club racing series) did duty. It’s always a very memorable experience for passengers, as can be witnessed by the big smiles on their faces, as they emerge from the car after their hotlaps, adrenaline still pumping through their veins at 8000 rpm! They are always surprised when they realise what the cars are capable of on a race track, especially so if they are fitted with the excellent super sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE-11S semi-slick rubber as they were on the day.
We also had our BMW CCG regalia on display and for sale, which always attracts a lot of interest. Offering a wide selection of shirts, caps and jackets, as well as non-clothing items there is something for every BMW enthusiast. Committee member Daleen Sadler, who heads up the club’s regalia, also proudly displayed our newest club shirt, featuring the ///M-logo as well as the “dog-leg” gearbox, as featured by some special classic BMW’s. This one is sure to be very popular, and a must have in the BMW CCG regalia collection!
Back to the on-track action, and as with all good things, the fun was over way too soon. Wrapping up the results of the day, fastest time trial BMW of the day was Leon Loubser, with a time of 1:03.933. However, overall fastest time of the day went to Pieter Zeelie, in his red rocket Toyota MR2, with a blistering time of 1:01.851.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for the day, Bridgestone, for making the day possible. Without your continued support we would not be able to host these fantastic track focused events, and be able to get our adrenaline fix, in a safe and enjoyable environment.
