After last year's full house and our biggest field ever of 70 people made up of 14 teams consisting of 5 people each, we knew there were some scores to be settled and that the event would again be very popular. And we weren't wrong! Again a full house of 70 people! Each team was all too eager to show off their driving prowess on the technically challenging 1km course.
Last year less than 20 seconds separated the top 2 positions after 2 hours and this year it was just a shade over 31 seconds! So again some very close and exciting racing!
As in the past, teams were allocated into 5 members each, with each driver doing two stints of 12 minutes so that 9 driver changes later the flag would drop after two hours had elapsed. While this might not sound like a long time, after 12 minutes you can certainly feel you’ve had a bit of a work out - especially with the lack of power steering! After Jeff from MCP Rental Carts did the drivers briefing and carts were randomly allocated to the teams, drivers headed out onto track to line up on the grid.
With 14 carts heading into the tight hairpin first corner, it wasn't long before some drivers were facing the wrong way!
After the first driver change the race started settling into a bit of a rhythm, with the fastest drivers setting some very competitive and close times. Lap times kept coming down throughout the 2 hour race, as driver confidence and grip increased, with the top teams setting times very close to each other, in the 1:02 region. The difference in the top 3 lap times (in different carts) was less than a second.
It was really close and clean racing for the duration of the two hours, with just over 30 seconds separating the 1st and 2nd position.
