It has long been a tradition at our Kyalami Track Days to get behind a worthy cause and sell Hot Laps to raise money and support. This year we are getting behind the plight of Baby Caylum Willemse. Bridgestone South Africa, BMW Driving Experience and some of the country’s top professional drivers have donated their time and resources to make this work.
Caylum Willemse was born on January 12th 2016 in Johannesburg and was diagnosed with tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) and oesophageal atresia (OA) by Netcare’s Dr Charles Caraphinha. This means he has problems with his oesophagus (the feeding tube) and the trachea (the windpipe). He was later diagnosed with Tracheobronchomalacia, a rare condition where the tracheal (windpipe) cartilage is soft.
His only chance to live is to undergo a lifesaving procedure pioneered by Dr Jennings at Bostons Children’s Hospital, a posterior tracheopexy. Currently there are no other doctors in the world who can perform this procedure; Dr Jennings pioneered this new treatment.
This little boy is such a fighter and has been through so much in his short life (almost all of which has been spent in hospital). His life can be saved, but we need (as confirmed by Dr Jennings) $500,000 to get him to Boston to undergo this procedure and the related care and expenses required. We are R600 000 away from getting the operation booked and confirmed without the related expenses, so it is crucial we get this amount done and dusted as soon as possible.
For more information, visit www.caylum.org.za or find them on Facebook by searching for Caylum Willemse.
The fee is R200 for 2 laps with a professional driver and will run from the first time trial sessions in session 2, 3 and 4. All the money raised will go to Caylum.
